Oddly enough, or perhaps not oddly at all, I m really enjoying Hellboy At first it was just an intellectual enjoyment, getting all into the conspiracy stuff and the metaphysics and the magic as well as the history, but now I m just rocking to the stories being told It s filled with gentle reveals, perhaps no than hints, and we ve got a grand sweep of untold history, but all these snippets are pure gold.I like Lobster Johnson and Roger a lot Alien intelligences and cthuhlu entities Even I m alm [...]

A phenomenal volume of Hellboy The Conqueror Worm is a turning point for the entire Hellboy universe, as it splits one great comic into two, Hellboy and BPRD respectively, as well as introduces a whole new character, Lobster Johnson and, as it turns out, also The Visitor, who now has his own great mini series When I first read Conqueror Worm, I gave it a pretty low rating, and I can sort of see why for a new reader, this might be too overwhelming, because so many parts of Hellboy s crazy mytholo [...]

Re read 8 3 15 See below This is probably my favorite of the books it deals with questions of free will and humanity, what they mean and what we do with them In this second read through of the series, I m conscious of how steeped in folklore it was from the beginning, but Conqueror Worm goes back to the origins of the series, bringing back some of our old Nazi friends and the constantly looming threat of the Ogdru Jahad, and I find that very satisfying And I absolutely love Roger the giant homu [...]

Lobster Johnson makes his first appearance, and I kept having the urge to say pow or zowee whenever Lobster was in action. And dear, wonderful Roger is on this mission with Hellboy And the head honcho at the BPRD shows some definite specism, which rightly disgusts Hellboy.

  5. Sesana

In a way, this volume feels like Mignola threw his entire basket of weird and creepy at us And yet, somehow, it all works Yes, there are Nazi zombies and ghosts and aliens and Still, it works And somehow, Mignola still has time to delve into Hellboy s character, than in most of the previous volumes And did I mention that it looks great Because it does, it looks fantastic.

  6. Barry

Easily the best single volume story in the Hellboy canon up until this point Occultism, science fiction horror, Nazis, cosmic terror, ancient sorcery everything that makes the pulps great are in full form here.

  7. Brendan Nicholls

Great story that brings in Lobster Johnson who I had wanted to see in the film series This book is classic Hellboy and after a string of oneshot books I was happy to have another fully fledged out story Granted the bulk of the crew are missing we still have enough strong secondary characters to keep this from falling short Mignola has created one of the strongest character lines and the depth of characters will keep this going for some time to come The villains are interesting and full of realis [...]

I just spent the past 2 weeks reading the Hellboy volumes 1 12 in a roughly chronological order Many of the volumes include various short pieces, and they are not in chronological order by volume In fact, the first stories chronologically actually are in Volume 4, then 11, 10, 7, 3, then 1, and so on You can find chronological reading lists on different websites I found the most useful and up to date on the Hellboy wikia, but you may encounter spoilers as you follow the chronology thread There w [...]

This was the second of two volumes of Hellboy that I picked up cheap and it was the less satisfying of the two Collecting a four part miniseries, this felt a little padded and of all the kinds of darkness I ve encountered in comics the Lovecraft influenced stuff is my least favourite So this one was a bit meh for me I like the Hellboy mythology and if I could pick up of these early collections at a reasonable price, I would consider adding them to the collection.

  10. Timothy Boyd

If you thought the Hellboy movies were good then you will love the comics Much backstory on the monsters and the history of hellboys origin This volume sets up the stage for the B.P.R.D War on Frogs storyline Great reads, Very recommended

  11. Koen Claeys

The best volume so far, in which almost everything we saw in the previous volumes comes together in an epic way even though the whole adventure takes place in an old castle The conclusion brings a big turning point in the series which results in another series B.P.R.D.

  12. Sujit Nair

Fear not, go boldly into your future Absolutely stunned by the plot and the illustrations Having been introduced to Hellboy recently and this being the first volume I ve picked up, I m keen about the whole hellboy universe Watch out Lobster Johnson, here comes trouble.

  13. Danielle The Book Huntress (Back to the Books)

Gee, I wish I d had time to write this review sooner, because my brain can be like a sieve I ll do my best, two weeks down the road.It s fairly obvious that I am a big fan of Mike Mignola, so the four star rating is not unexpected I love me some Hellboy, which sounds really strange to say, but there it is Hellboy faces his past head on in this fifth installment in the series He is confronted with his identity and how others may see him as he becomes an advocate for Roger, a homunculus who is tre [...]

  14. Matthew Brady

This volume is kind of weird, incorporating aliens and extradimensional, Lovecraftian creatures into the ongoing Hellboy mythology It kind of works, but I think I prefer when the series takes a mythological approach, which, if I remember correctly, is where the series mostly went in subsequent volumes Still, lots of good action, some nice character moments with Roger the Homunculus, Lobster Johnson, and even some interesting smaller bits with Rasputin, Hecate, and Baba Yaga Now I m going to hav [...]

  15. Stephen Theaker

A very enjoyable tale, mixing Captain America, Lovecraft and the Doom Patrol with a touch of Shazam It s easy to see the influence of those other comics, but then those are our modern legends, the modern equivalents of the ancient myths with which Mignola also works. This was the first Hellboy book I ve read for which Mike Mignola was entirely responsible, and the tone was strikingly confident and consistent There s still the odd page that left me casting around to see what was going on, but the [...]

2016 Re Read Mike Mignola s head must have exploded when he wrote this one You ve got a haunted castle, a Nazi space program, Elder Gods, a mad scientist head in a jar and his War Ape, and the first appearance and last hurrah of Lobster Johnson Plus, the ending marks a major turning point in Hellboy s life, showing that in the overall series Mignola isn t afraid to mess with the status quo. This volume marks the point where I started reading Hellboy in monthly comic form, though all these stories [...]

  17. Nicholas

Whoops, accidentally read this ahead of Volume 4, but I don t think it matters all that much Conqueror Worm is dreadfully awesome Evocative of Indiana Jones, HP Lovecraft, and the macabre poetry of Poe intentional all at once, with a human element as Mignola develops Roger toward humanhood as probably the most likable of the BPRD crew Ends with a pretty momentous cliffhanger, but I don t feel that compulsion to find out what s next in store for Hellboy These books are just fun and imaginative to [...]

  18. Orrin Grey

If I had to pick one favorite Hellboy trade, I might reluctantly choose this one Certainly its my favorite of the big mini series collections This is where Mignola really came into his own, both in storytelling and artwork, and the titular Conqueror Worm is one of the all time great monsters of ever Plus, Lobster Johnson

  19. Fiona

Possibly my favourite volume of the ones I ve read so far up to volume 8 The plot s great and the artwork is particularly beautiful I think this is the first one where I noticed the use of colour and how great it makes some of the pages look.

  20. Blake

First Mignola Hellboy I ever read Loved the story, not so much the art, but it gradually grew on me Since then read any BPRD, HELLBOY, or ABE SAPIEN I can get my comic book hands on.

  21. Horselover Fat

This must have been my sixth time reading Conquerer Worm and yet again, I found myself incapable of putting it down A masterpiece in every sense of the word Look Roger, a dead alien.

  22. Jennifer Juffer

Filled with unshakable loyalty toward humanity, the very antithesis of why and by whom he was created, I found Hellboy, in this issue, to be humane than most of humanity.Extremely well written, with breathtakingly detailed artistry, the story comes alive in a manner I haven t encountered in previous Hellboy issues 1 4.The plot is slowly furthered, with a side tangent that is somewhat relevant Yet, it isn t till the end that I was filled with a WHAT THE F I saw it, but I didn t see it coming and [...]

  23. Ethan

After two volumes of shorts, we re back to heftier narratives and the bigger picture Although this volume has its own narrative, it feels like setup for stuff that will have payoff towards the end of the series We also get a new character, Lobster Johnson, and Roger is even developed and an easy favorite character All of the elements of Hellboy are working in tandem here, from the occult, to the religious, to the Nazi fighting, to the Lovecraftian, and The series has really hit its stride in [...]

  24. Robert Hudder

I love the homunculus Seriously, Roger is a great character He was almost responsible for the death of Liz and has had an odd relationship with humanity ever since This was a great story that exposed this drive of his His reactions are human that human or maybe it is the action of a servant and creation of humankind Sometimes the homunculus is a stand in for technology and commenting on it I am not sure of what was intended but the way the story unfolds gives me some pause to consider this ques [...]

  25. Martin Hrabal

I have read the whole series but this one I was missing And finally, I have new edition and got the last piece in the Mignola s great universe, where diverse mythologies, alternative history and fascinating characters mixes together Hellboy is my favourite comics and even that Worm Conqueror is not as good as others I like the short stories most , it is still great story with beautiful drawings.

  26. Adam Stone

The stronger books in the Hellboy lines are the ones that focus on a singular story And this is a solid one, building a bit off of Almost Colossus from The Chained Coffin, but quite a lot on both Seeds Of Destruction and Wake The Devil It s not a story that would stand on its own, and it would be a terrible place to start reading Hellboy, but as a part of the larger narrative, it s immensely satisfying, and helps set up the first run of the BPRD books.

  27. Zachary King

Great Very moody haunted castle story involving Nazis, disembodied heads, talking apes, Lovecraftian worms, and the ghost of the pulp hero Lobster Johnson Hellboy bristles against the BPRD and goes into the field with Roger the Homunculus I believe I am long overdue for a Hellboy reread

  28. Heli Miranda ahumada

Me gusto mas que el volumen anterior la historia Muchos personajes nuevos agregados y algunas expplicaciones, otras cosas entran mas ambiguas, parece que el mal es alien.
