If you have read the Quinton Journals in order you will know there s a continuation of family problems involving the current Earl of Ravensden and particularly his new wife This part of the story continues and Matthew and his wife separately get involved in this intrigue during the course of this third book. Before Matthew is granted command of his next ship he responds to the scene of HMS London s tragic explosion But there is little he or anyone can do after this devastating explosion. With war [...]

Another Outstanding StoryThe intrigue and significant factors of the story s plot makes this book easy to read and digestion The author writes well, using his knowledge of seventeenth century Great Britain as the basis for the plot Well written and part of a well thought out series, this book is a great read.

I m rating the book highly for historical research and atmosphere, yet it isn t that easy or compelling a read Set in 1665, we see London under the Plague and just prior to the Great Fire Ships at sea are considered safer, and that s even when England goes to war with the Dutch We haven t seen much of this period in other books so the comparison is interesting As yet the Navy is not uniformed so captains and officers can wear what they like The stern plain Puritans have recently been ousted by t [...]

The third part of the series is the strongest thus far Matthew Quinton manages to captain a ship for longer than a couple of chapters, for one, and we even get a few good naval action scenes The family mystery plotline is still a bit dull going, but it might be that even that is finally coming to its conclusion Overall, this series is a great contrast to Patrick O Brian s Aubrey Maturin series as one gets to see how the Royal Navy has developed and changed over the centuries.Hopefully the author [...]

the third book in this fairly new series is the best one yet, with extended naval combat at the end and a good resolution to the complicated family problems arising in the previous work Spies, skullduggery, the plague, suspension of former Roundheads by the Cavaliers, and, as always, the impressive depth of historical detail and knowledge that Davies brings to his books As a big fan of Samuel Pepys, I always enjoy seeing the people who populated his dairy pop in and out these books.

Matt Quinton succeeds against the oddsIntrigue, plotting, and politics Almost sounds like the USA election in 2016 Machiavellian maneuvering, hidden family secrets, and fostering the English crown Really enjoyable Battle scenes so realistic you would think you were there.
