The lecture was called Jewish History They Did Not Teach You in Hebrew School , or something like that The lecturer, Adam Chalom, had just finished editing an unfinished work on Jewish history by Sherwin T Wine, founder of Humanistic Judaism As a former Modern Orthodox Jew who has done a lot of soul searching, I have than unlearned the propaganda that my teachers called history when I was in yeshiva Nevertheless, I always welcome a new perspective I tried Milton Steinberg s Basic Judaism I trie [...]

I admit that the audience for this book is probably exceedingly small Who wants to read a comprehensive and detailed history of the Jewish people from a secular perspective Apparently, I do This book was phenomenal, and it s amazing how much I learned about my family s heritage At times, it was quite biblical in detail, which got kind of dull, but I could skim those parts My only major criticism, and I do consider this to be a major criticism, is that there were hardly any citations for anything [...]

Tells a vast Jewish history in very broad strokes This book tries to tell the history of Jewish development within the context of the surrounding world history but it does it too broadly It gets into minutiae of minor movements of Jews as they were tossed from place to place but it treats each change superficially.I feel like Wine and Chalom are probably knowledgeable enough to write a set of books three times the length of this one, and that s probably what they should have done.I hung in stron [...]

Wow, it s been awhile since I ve actually given a book a low rating, but this one just missed the mark A Provocative People read much like the Bible itself, This happened, then this, then this BORING I assume since it was written by the eminent Sherwin Wine it would hit my fancy It did not Please note though, my one star is a little unfair as I did not actually complete the book Why would I bother for a didactic and dull history lesson

Not an academic work, A Provocative People is a good survey of a history of the Jews by a brilliant author It is but an appetizer for history reading and research To that end, the book serves as a wonderful outline.

I of thought it was a very good book It kept my interest all the way through I really apprecieted the secular approach since i myself am an atheist It was also interesting put together being a complilation of prevviously unpublsihed material.

EXCELLENT I disagree with some of his colorful theories that are the equivalent of humanistic fundamentalism, but otherwise it s a terrific read.
