Although this restaurant is nearly in the Bay Area I hadn t heard of it until I was discussing Noma Time and Place in Nordic Cuisine with someone who described it as the closest California equivalent I can see the comparison Both chefs create unusual, extremely elaborate dishes with a focus on local ingredients, dishes that ultimately seem like art experiences than comestibles Both had descriptions that made me think, That s insane However, while in Noma s case I often thought, That s insane bu [...]

A beautifully made book The photos are gorgeous, the package lush The story behind the creation of the chef and his unique restaurant is well written Unlike most cookbooks I did not finish this book with plans to recreate any of his dishes They seemed too much like a spectator sport than anything that I could aspire to.

Beautifully photographed and nicely written This book is not for me as a home cook as I don t have the techniques required and am not willing to source the ingredients, but it delicious look at and read.

This reviewer must confess a smidgeon of ignorance by not recognising the author, who is apparently one of the San Francisco Bay Area s star chefs who has become known for how he has revolutionised restaurant culture with his take on the farm to table ethic and focus on the terroir of the Northern California coast Mind you, ignorance can be a blessing and it means that one has no preconceptions or expectations either This is a richly decorated, highly illustrated book with a fair few pleasant di [...]

Very much a coffee table cookbook swoon worthy photographs of culinary delights but also filled with great thoughts on food philosophy, renowned chef David Kinch s own story laced with hedonism, but also some profound insights , and the tale of one of the best restaurants in California as well as the farm that provides its produce Love Apple Farms Kinch is especially generous in sharing the recipes for some of his most famous dishes most restaurateurs fret over sharing this information in their [...]

I very rarely write reviews, and even less frequently for cookbooks But this book by chef David Kinch is a remarkable piece of food and life philosophy, and the expression of a very focused life Despite the fact that the overwhelming majority of the recipes are not going to happen in my pathetic kitchen at home, they are articulated clearly and surrounded by the unmistakable voice of the author Also gorgeous artwork If you want to understand the nature of what a restaurant like Manresa is built [...]

4.5 stars Although I would never be able to afford to eat there but would definitely want to , and would not make the complicated recipes, they were very inspiring, and photographed beautifully This guy is living the dream, or maybe I should say the woman with whom he contracted to create a farm that provides all his fresh, bespoke produce etc is living my dream, even down to where they live But instead of just being depressed and jealous, I enjoyed reading about it The book even includes art, a [...]

One of the most difficult cookbooks I ve ever owned and that s saying something I won t be able to make almost anything from here There are a few recipes that are simple , an omelet with truffles, for example, but I don t think there is any recipe that does not require special ingredients I have a pretty diverse pantry but I don t have acetate, I don t have silver gelatin, I don t have yogurt powder or glucose I still really like the cookbook It s beautiful, it s lovely to read and maybe I will [...]

This book was interesting in perspective, to what food means to Kinch It was well written with interesting little stories about the restaurant, geography, farms, and actual food items The pictures were beautiful I learned a lot about what Manresa is and how every little detail is purposeful and seamless This is not a traditional cookbook, nor should it be read as such It is a delightful written work that explains a chef s philosophy and passion

I love the approach this restaurant has to food incredibly fresh food from a farm 12 miles away I will never attempt any of the recipes in this book, but it s beautiful And I hope to save up some bucks so I can dine at Manresa one day soon.

Visually and texturally, Manresa earns a place in my cookbook collection However, the recipes are too complex for the average cook.

  12. Tom

It s quite nice Even if you re not a chef Interesting backgrounds in each chapter Expensive but very inspiring.

  13. Jennifer

This is a stunningly beautiful cookbook The recipes are not for the novice cook They are complicated and use ingredients not always available to even accomplished cooks.
