Lately I m all about short stories This is an excellent collection.I especially loved the story entitled Vera s room I m fascinated by adoption stories and really feel that not enough people have written about adoption.I was fascinated by the themes of motherhood and relationship to children in this collection I could relate to it a lot.I have a lot of respect for Deeth, especially after I read her article in the National Post called A writer who writes what she wants.

Surprising that this excellent collection only has two reviews so far to me, it s one of those books that you want to talk about with every like minded reader you know Deeth s characters are real They re you and me, they re our sisters and daughters and mothers and friends They yearn for hope, security, passion, for lives that matter they live in the constant tension between what they long to attain and what they fear they deserve They resolve to move forward, beyond heartbreak and failure they [...]

An unflinching look at several varieties of relationships with parents, lovers, children, and self No Pollyanna mentalities here Deeth s protagonists are real and flawed not always likable but profoundly human These character driven stories leave the reader hip deep in ambivalence, painfully aware of the wounds and failures that may anchor us in place, hungering again for that nameless something we all strive to grasp.Recommended for lovers of serious contemporary fiction Literature at its best [...]

These stories focus on women negotiating their gender identities in the face of family breakups and the alienation of contemporary life The women in these stories are having babies, losing babies, and longing for babies They seek secure mates while knowing, or being told, that a good man is hard to find Sometimes these men appear, sometimes they don t The prose style is sleek but not minimalist The women know danger and disappointment lurk, but they muck through anyway.

I didn t know what expect when I started this book.I normally don t care for short stories I read each story like a Noah Hawley show Which is great to me Each story had its way of getting into my brain and taking a look at the simular relationships around me Each story instantly made me feel like I knew these characters Kelli Deeth , has become a favorite of mine.

Somehow, I just couldn t seem to identify with or relate to any of the characters in this collection of stories, and I found the tone of most of them to be at least mildly depressing However, I thought they were all very written, hence the 3 star rating.
