I am not naturally a pessimist, though when I saw David Murray s latest book The Happy Christian Ten Ways to be a Joyful Believer in a Gloomy World Thomas Nelson, 2015 , I was a bit skeptical To be clear, I have a deep appreciation for Dr Murray and I am a committed fan to his blog As a Christian psychologist and editor of the newsletter for the Society for Christian Psychology, I believe that Dr Murray is one of the bright lights of the movement I have put his little book, Christians Get Depres [...]

Is another book on happiness and positive thinking needed Certainly this topic provokes cringes, cynicism, and discomfort a knee jerk reaction which is not without a basis Perennially opportunistic charlatans and hucksters profess to have new techniques in this endeavour There is a great deal of material that amounts to a rip off, misleads people, gives false hope, evades reality pretending there is no evil sadness pain sin , ignores key dimensions of human experience and the human condition Or [...]

3.5The thesis is great really well researched book I think the equations as sub titles were a bit corny But I like how he stayed away from the main traps common prosperity, verses out of context, psychological than biblical, etc with this topic I think the final chapters were not up to par as the rest of the book yes it makes for a thorough book, but it also feels a bit unnecessary by this point The writing is also a bit repetitive after a while Overall, I benefitted from this book and will com [...]

Helpful book, enjoyable read, and good application of Biblical truth to daily life Good in each chapter with two chapters standing out 1 good news is better than bad news ch two , and 2 praise is better than criticism ch seven It is hard to be happy when either filling mind with both bad negative stuff and the trivial, and being critical rather than praising What Murray s book Reset is to the body, The Happy Christian is to the mind.Recommend

It s tough to be happy, even in a time and place where a lot of people have relatively peace, wealth, and freedom than ever We live in a world where, thanks to the 24 hour news cycle, we can be bombarded by bad news literally all the time Time or distance no longer separate us from the pain of the world at large, which is great if we can pray and even physically lend a hand, but can also lead to sense of hopelessness as images of catastrophe and injustice come to us from all over the world Ev [...]

This was a good book with a lot of practical information I m sure it was hard to write this book and not come off as being too positive, in the sense of everything is perfect in the world, it all just depends on your outlook instead, David Murray gets into the real and nitty gritty of pain and suffering and depression, and yet addresses life from a biblical perspective on how to be a joyful believer.

Dr David Murray s new book The Happy Christian Ten Ways to be a Joyful Believer in a Gloomy World, presents the following ten ways to be joyful Focus on the facts than your feelings Avoid so much bad news and focus on good news Focus on the fact that Christ s work of salvation is already finished Focus on the strengths of other Christians instead of their weaknesses Focus strengths of other Christians instead of their weaknesses Find God s common grace in the world instead of sin and evil Find [...]

This is a great study of happiness in the Christian life Murray unpacks the idea of happiness in the context of discussing living by facts rather than feelings the Gospel as happiness producing life in the church Christian hope common grace affirmation giving work and cultural diversity. It s a very stimulating read Of note is Murray s heavy use of secular psychology and sociology for points of contact I didn t have any trouble with this in view of general revelation and common grace, but some mi [...]

Prof David Murray has done the church a great service by writing The Happy Christian 10 ways to be a joyful believer in a gloomy world Although he never outright says it, I get the impression that Murray has found it a challenge to pursue biblical joy I tend to approach life as a melancholic personality Therefore, I am drawn to those who have not found it easy or simple to achieve the levels of joy that some believer seem to take for granted. It is refreshing for me to see someone from a reformed [...]

The Happy Christian is a book that encourage Christians to have a positive faith and life After an introductory chapter where Dr Murray shares his hopes for his book and identifies some of the reasons for negativity and unhappiness in our culture, he helps his readers to understand ten biblical and practical ways to increase happiness First, he encourages us to watch our media diet by applying Philippians 4 8 In one of my favorite chapters of the book, Dr Murray comforts his readers who are cons [...]

I love David Murray because he shows what I think is an excellent balance between biblically grounded, testing all things by Scripture, and Christ centered along with appreciating and using what we might call the common grace insights into our human life from the sciences He does not let unbiblical interpretation of evidence trump Scripture, but what he does do is bring together Scripture s inspired, inerrant teachings with the good that comes from scientific research Then, using that, he shows [...]

I hesitated in giving this book 3 stars Did I truly like it or was it just OK I guess I liked it OK The topic is a valuable one, since Christians and non Christians alike struggle with negativism and varying degrees of depression Many people I know, including Christians, deal with these challenges on a regular basis The need is there. It happens that I don t often find myself struggling with such issues Is that because I grew up in a family that modeled a positive outlook on life Perhaps Conversa [...]

Should a Christian always be happy Or morbid Perhaps some might think that it is biblical to be morbid that happy but David Murray has actually written this book to help christians be happy christians. In essence Murray wants to highlight the importance of joy and happiness in the christian life But rather than just showing the benefits of being positive, Murray also wants to show that being positive is actually biblical He brings 10 ideas to the readers and shows how each of them can help us be [...]

People tend to lean towards being negative And often Christians are viewed as the gloomiest of all So the author has taken his knowledge of theology and pulled from psychology and modern science to write a book about how Christians can be happy despite the negativity that surrounds us.The book is written with a heavy slant towards psychology and brings out some great points about addressing the issues that keep us from being positive and joyful The author is honest and authentic, which is refres [...]

In our daily living, we can either choose JOY or we can choose to taken out by the stuff we see in the news The choice is ours However, our life isn t easy and I m not even going to pretend it is because I know it is extremely difficult I LOVE how each chapter teaches us how to take something that could be sad and spins it into something happy in an optimistic way The world can really drag us down The book talks about topics such as the media, guilt, feelings, the past, sin criticism and many , [...]

In his wide ranging book The Happy Christian, David Murray offers his spin on the psychology research surrounding happiness If you ve read much in this genre before you ll recognize the books and studies he cites, and you may have made many of the same applications to your life if you re a Christian, but Murray s book is still helpful and worthwhile, especially if you have no intention of reading anything else about happiness. While I personally have found some secular books on happiness to be be [...]

I m on my second time through this book to find out why I have such a very negative reaction to it and because I m studying it with friends , and I think I ve found the reason the author s introduction is among the most negative things I ve read in a while He s basically setting up a straw man, assuming all Christians agree with it, and then correcting them Still, the book itself is OK the actual positive psychology literature is a bit interesting than the excerpts and summaries, but the author [...]

After reading The year of living Danishly which looks at why people in Denmark are some of the happiest on the planet I thought I d read a Christian approach to the same sort of topic This book is OK I agree with most things that are said and there are a lot of good and valid points I just found the book rather dry I wanted to laugh and smile whilst reading about positive psychology, but this book doesn t offer this.

  20. Steve Johnson

A thorough examination of 1 Biblical counsel regarding happiness and 2 the science of happiness Thought provoking, encouraging, and convicting, Murray s book is an easy read chock full of specific applications.

  21. Phil Butcher

This book aims to help Christians grow in joy in the midst of a negative society Some chapters are great it is worth reading the one on encouragement alone But I struggled with the author s writing style and sometimes found it a bit too formulaic.

  22. Christopher Gambrell

A great book.Really brought to the surface of mind issues that I ve been dealing with all my life A great resource for those seeking a biblical hall hall happiness.
