Peter the First Aleksey Nikolayevich Tolstoy Here, for the first time, in its final form and in a new translation, is the epic Russian novel which has sold in its native country over two million copies Alexey Tolstoy who was not related to the author of War and Peace began to study the character of his hero, Peter the First, in 1917 When he died almost thirty years later, Tolstoy was still working on his masterpiHere, for the first time, in its final form and in a new translation, is the epic Russian novel which has sold in its native country over two million copies Alexey Tolstoy who was not related to the author of War and Peace began to study the character of his hero, Peter the First, in 1917 When he died almost thirty years later, Tolstoy was still working on his masterpiece, this huge historical canvas which gives brilliant life and meaning to a crucial period in Russian history Tolstoy reanimates the past by a succession of character creations which range from the serf, Ivan Brodkin, to Peter s sinister and opportunistic favorite, Alexander Menshikoff from the old Boyars shorn of their beards and their prerogatives to the foreign captains of the new Russian navy Here in these pages are the beautiful Anna Mons, Peter s first mistress his wife Eudoxia, whom he never loved and the peasant girl who eventually was to be crowned Empress Catherine the First We see these men and women moving across a tapestry of battles abroad, and amid the dark, opulent luxury of the great families and the Imperial Court In Tolstoy s moving crowded pages we see the emergence of Russia, thrust forward by Peter s inexorable will, from a backward medieval state to her final position as one of the great powers of Europe Here are magnificent portraits, the fruits of years of historical research, of Peter s principal opponents August, Elector of Saxony, indefatigable in his amusements, and King Charles XII of Sweden, a great military genius, flawed by passion and indulgence But the true hero of Tolstoy s epic is Peter himself We see him grow to be a man awkward, suspicious, prone to spasms of cowardice, but always driving, sometimes provoked almost to madness, to free his country from the chains of backwardness and superstition to take her place as an equal among the nations of the west And in the last analysis it is this greatness and originality of character in its hero which gives the stamp of greatness to the book itself Alexey Tolstoy was born in 1883 In 1918 he published his first full length work, Nikita s Childhood In 1919 he fled from the Bolshevik government and settled in Paris In 1922 he asked for and received permission to return home For the next twenty four years he lived in Russia, until his death in 1946.

Peter the First is newly on my top ten of all time list Alexei Tolstoy is no relation to Leo Tolstoy, the author of War and Peace to my mind, Alexei is by far the greater writer This book finds humor and hope in the midst of horror and despair it is sexy, witty, and droll In the first lines of Peter the First we meet Sanka, an impoverished little girl in threadbare rags, sitting butt naked on a still warm stove with her brothers in the dead of a Russian winter Two thirds through, she will become [...]

This book is awesome and unlike the other Tolstoi, not much attention was given this writer s book s in our lit study curriculum It is a truly amazing account of social and personal change Personal detail I remember being seriously behind on the lit review for my high school graduation exams, and then college essay exam studies because of being totally absorbed by this book My college essay exam was based on Tolstoy s book, which happened to be the most obscure subject matter of the 4 choices of [...]

So I m going ahead and throw this on my Favorites shelf I have an unbridged version, translated rather poorly into dutch somewhere between the 50 s and 60 s but still it has made an unbelievable impact on me Where Leo Tolstoi wrote best about the rich Russian society, Alexi is the master of portraying the poor, the miserable, the dirty, the dying and the hopeless, all aided with amazing illustrations and typographyIn short this 1000 page novel, I have part 2 and 3 waiting for me follows Russia a [...]

Excellent historical novel, on par with Young Henry of Navarre and Henry, King of France, which to me set the benchmark of the entire genre.Aleksey Tolstoy, a very distant relative of both the famous Leo Tolstoy and another famous Russian writer, Ivan Turgenev, imbues his depiction of the most venerated Russian ruler with a vibrancy and richness of detail, engaging all senses, that one seems to immerge into the uncertain and volatile world of late 17th century Russia. This, unfortunately unfinis [...]

Tolstoy s epic covers Peter s early life and rise to power prior to the Battle of Narva, and is rife with drama and history While Tolstoy leaves out some details of Peter s life, he makes up for it with a rich cast of characters, places, and historical events that shaped modern Russia Not a well known book in the West, but an excellent example of Russian historical fiction from the Russian perspective.

  10. Czarny Pies

This is an absolutely fabulous historical novel unfinished alas by a member of both the Tolstoy and Turgenev families He shows throughout the novel flashes of the same brilliance of his famous relatives. The last third of Peter the Great s life is not covered in this book which is a tremendous pity.

I saw two Russian films called Young Peter the Great and The Great Beginning about the life of Peter the Great, Russia s Czar who wanted to Westernize Russia and turn it away from being The Third Rome or a continuation of Bzyantium This novel is based on those two films and is basically about Peter the Great s life as a young man.
