Things need to get ugly before they can get better It s that simple It s a fact of life This quote couldn t be true in Rob Buyea s latest book, The Perfect Score.Gavin a football nut , Natalie a wannabe lawyer , Randi a top gymnast under a lot of pressure , Scott a brainiac , and Trevor a tough guy who hates school are all about to start sixth grade When they find out Mr Mitchell, the awesome teacher they were suppose to have, is being replaced with Mrs Woods, an old lady who is coming out of r [...]

I was given a review copy from RHCB The Perfect Score is told through the voices of 5 students in 6th grade While they are all different, they share their universal dislike for the CBA standardized tests coming up The book is told in a similar short chapter, switching voices technique from Buyea s previous Mr Terupt books I personally yearn for a little emotional connection with the characters, but I thinks it s a great choice for upper elementary or middle school students However, I doubt 8 9t [...]

This book was a great read I felt like the plot was pretty predictable, but overall the whole thing was a fun read I liked how the characters changed and learned from their mistakes Overall, nothing spectacular, but good nonetheless.

E ARC from NetgalleyMrs Woods is brought in at the last minute to be a long term sub in a 6th grade class She is retired, and doesn t particularly care about the all important state assessments she would rather read with the students and have them enjoy learning In chapters told from the points of view of different students in the class, we see how the year progresses, the projects that are completed, the home lives of the speakers and the challenges they face, and then the delivery of the test [...]

Good book, I really liked all the characters, but I liked Scott and Natalie especially cause I can mostly relate to them because I sometimes do things that cause big trouble IDK TBH, but Scott and Natalie are the two that are my favorite, but the rest are gr8 as well.

I had the opportunity to read an advanced copy of this book through my BookRelays team on Twitter I think this is a terrific book for all teachers to read as it takes a critical look at our high stakes testing culture from the point of view of five different students at Lakeview Middle School The narrative starts at the beginning of sixth grade for these students They re dealing with the stress of starting Middle School, along with troubles at home, new teachers, bullying, and new teachers As th [...]

As an adult who thinks the standardized testing craze is crazy, I loved this middle grade book Told from the perspective of five new 6th graders, this one had me in tears at the end At first I thought the characters were too simplistic but as the story unfolds, each character becomes nuanced All of the kids face pressure of some sort in their daily lives but all are unexpectedly enjoying their new teachers especially old, brought out of retirement Mrs Woods But as the date for the all important [...]

From the author of the Because of Mr Terupt series Starting 6th grade in the middle school is hard enough as it is, but then add the pressure of standardized testing and the stress can be too hard to handle Told in multiple perspectives of five students in Mrs Wood s classroom Randi the gymnast, Gavin the football fan, Trevor who hates school, Scott with a big heart, and Natalie the aspiring lawyer The entire school is worried and anxious about the approaching standardized tests Mrs Woods is bac [...]

Like in his previous Mr Terupt trilogy, Rob Buyea tells a school story from many different perspectives In this first book in a new trilogy, the reader meets five children in Mrs Wood s sixth grade class that are dealing with various pressures and challenges in their lives When additional pressure is put on them to do well on the upcoming statewide assessment test, they make a decision together on how to deal with it This is a story about kindness and compassion and whether it is okay to do the [...]

  15. Lorie Barber

A book that all kids and teens can relate to and will LOVE about doing the wrong thing for the right reasons I absolutely adored every second of this book, written in classic Buyea multi point of view style The characters are beautifully developed, with their own unique voices shining through The problems were multi layered, sometimes subtle, and provide great moral dilemmas about which kids and adults will think deeply A must add to any middle grade library.

  16. LeeAnne

This is a wonderful middle grade book that follows the 6th grade year of Gavin and his best friend Randi, his nemesis Natalie, Scott the outsider, and two too big for their britches best friends, Trevor and Mark A new teacher, brought back from retirement after an unexpected vacancy, has taken over their 6th grade classroom, and she s not only old, she s old school Most of the kids are able to adjust and learn to like many of the things she is doing, until she has to consume a lot of their time [...]

As a super fan of Because of Mr Terupt, I was a bit hesitant, but this book was excellent. The characters were instantly entertaining, each with his or her own issues at home that impact their behavior with their new teacher, Ms Woods, who had been brought out of retirement due to a teacher resigning.I loved the life lessons in this book and also the concept of healing by helping others All of the kids have endearing qualities, but Scott stole the show for mehis tender heart and messy execution r [...]

I m going to be in the minority and say that this was just okay I think the main hook kids doing something about school testing came way too late in the book I also get thrown off a bit when 6th graders have recess, it s just not the case in our area, and makes the book read a little younger than it should But that s just me Kids who like slice of school life titles or the author s previous books will still like this one.

  19. Ron

This is another excellent book by Buyea It deals with a bunch of 6th graders, a new teacher actually 2 , and standardized testing The book is written from the perspective of each student as they have their own chapters.

  20. Suzie

Over 350 pages for a 5 6th grade book that was way too long for a slow moving plot with not much happening Sweet ending but still not enough there to make the time putting into reading the story worth it.

  21. Hoover Public Library Kids and Teens

When you re young and already under tremendous pressure, how do you cope with the added pressure of standardized tests Told from multiple viewpoints within the same class.

  22. Stacy Mozer

Told from multiple points of view, this book addresses the too real issue of over testing in schools while introducing us to a number of wonderful characters who grow and change throughout the book I hope it will be a series.

Adjectives heartwarming, engrossing, inspiring5 6th grade students lead very different lives, but the statewide testing affects them all every kid has motivation to do well on the test for different reasons pressure from parents, to qualify for school sports, etc The pressure becomes so bad, and the school focuses on the tests so much, that only one option seems to guarantee them the scores they need a way to cheat. The story is told from the different viewpoints of the 5 main characters They all [...]

SPOILERS AT END OF REVIEW This book was truly amazing It went really deep with some issues such as having pressure put on you by your parents and being abused by siblings I feel like these issues are often overlooked with things like child abuse, emotionally and physically This is a story about making the wrong choice for the right reasons doing something because you believe in it You know its right and you know that you need to do this to stop someone from being put in the same position as you [...]

When this hits the shelves in October, read it Working in elementary school, I read novels for all ages The Perfect Score delves into the typical YA territory of exploring friendship, bullying, pressures, and struggles with parents and siblings However, authored by a teacher, the varying storylines are brought together superbly to create a vivid, fast paced novel that sharply questions teaching to the test While the main characters are 6th graders, it also smartly touches on aging and dementia, [...]
