Many years from now, when they look back over the wreckage of American literature, they will discover that Robert Girardi was writing the real thing in his time here I know of no other writer in America who could have written Gorgeous East And the lousy review in Publisher s Weekly was written by someone who wanted beyond hope and dreaming to be able to write a novel like this, but just couldn tS

At first I thought this novel about the French Foreign Legion was awful Girardi had the first character we meet, Phillipe de Noyer, just knowing that a woman was going to commit suicide by walking down the street De Noyer is a French aristocrat, a musician fascinated with Erik Satie, and an elite officer in the Foreign Legion He rescues the woman, then marries her We flash forward several years, and de Noyer is sent to Morocco as part of a UN team studying the ongoing battle between the SADR a p [...]

Robert Girardi, if you are reading this, please please please do not make us wait so freaking long for your next novel I mean, Gorgeous East was worth the wait and all, but geeeees This novel is a spectacular addition to a spectacular and hugely underappreciated, in my humble opinion body of work I had no knowledge of or, frankly, interest in the French Foreign Legion prior to reading this book, but by the end of the novel I felt I had a pretty good sense of what it was all about, and I had been [...]

I loved Girardi s last novel The Wrong Doyle , and so was mightily pleased after seven years to see that he finally had a new one out And as it deals with the modern French Foreign Legion a topic I find mysterious and interesting and the neverending conflict in the Western Sahara a topic I have a family connection to , I was even eager to dive into it Unfortunately, the book is a bit of a confused mess that, despite Girardi s keen prose, left me disappointed. The story largely revolves around tw [...]

Robert Girardi s Gorgeous East is the story of three French Foreign Legionnaires Caporal John Smith, an American theatre star Caporal Evariste Pinard, a Canadian, and Colonel Philippe de Noyers, a French aristocrat These three men, who come to the legion through various means Smith s vacation in Istanbul is one of the most entertaining parts of the novel and leads directly to his enlistment and all wind up in the Moroccan desert pursuing a madman rebel leader known as Al Bab.The characters are a [...]

I ve read a few of Girardi s books PIRATE S DAUGHTER is my favorite and he s something of an acquired taste He s not writing cookie cutter plots or charactershe is charting his own way, sometimes straddling several genres at once romance, adventure epic, literary fiction, ghost story, satire etc His stories are ambitious in scope and conception, often require a very large suspension of disbelief, and than a little patience he sometimes goes over the top or loses his grip on a consistent tone Tha [...]

Very engaging book, this is the first book I can remember thinking this should be made into a movie Set in New York, Turkey, France, and North Africa, the book has plenty of action, romance, suspense, and even a musical motif I found myself looking for opportunities to pick up the action, in spite of other things on my to do list Nonetheless, I finished the book in two days it was that interesting. The one thing that kept it from getting a five star rating from me was the denouement After such a [...]

Maybe I m not sufficiently interested in or impressed with the French Foreign Legion, and that s why I didn t enjoy this book very much However, I thought it started out a bit ludicrous with an amazing intuitive leap by one of the protagonists that was never satisfactorily explained In fact, that s how I felt about a lot of the book I felt most of the main characters were portrayed as supermen much stronger, intuitive, smarter, resourceful, and sensitive than anyone else in the book The main [...]

3.5 starsVisiting my local neighborhood library achingly few choices without a plan of action, I succumbed to the New Fiction wall Gorgeous East is modern day fiction about the French Foreign Legion and its storied history of low down, bottom of the barrel recruits Men without honor who have no where else to turn find acceptance in the corps.A religious war being fought in Western Sahara requires the services of the FFL Three soldier s stories intertwine as they fight to stay alive, live with ho [...]

I liked this book because It dealt with topics that I have little familiarity with North Africa and the people of the Sahara desert, and the French Foreign Legion It also discussed mental illness and explored why people do what they do Robert Girardi managed to weave current events, literature, music and movies into a sometimes violent story that also included hope and humor I ve heard of people who spend a huge amount of time writing or preparing to write a novel This book had so much in its 33 [...]

I picked up this book at the library just on a browse From the first page, I just couldn t put it down, and I m still bummed that it is finished On the surface, its not the type of book that I would expect to like macho adventure military shoot em up but you know, the writing is excellent, the story multi layered, and the setting North Africa has always interested me and intrigued me I loved it.

A page turner thriller with an absurdist bent Where else can one find a story about the French Foreign Legion in which the final confrontation hinges on the main character s ability to belt out broadway showtunes I really enjoyed some of the author s mordant twists.

Entertaining enough, and set in the current French Foreign Legion, a fascinating organization in any age But Madeleine s Ghost is still my favorite Girardi.
