After reading and enjoying Gary Burge s The Bible and the Land, I was eager to read Jesus, the Middle Eastern Storyteller However I found much of the information in this book I already knew I suppose as modern day Christians we spent a lot of time studying the Gospels and other parts of the New Testament, to learn about Jesus and his context We hear sermons about Jesus than we do about the land of Israel and this is as it should be Jesus is the focal point of our faith and therefore the focus o [...]

This short book of 108 pages is filled with wonderful pictures of the ancient Near East, Burge expounds six examples of Jesus story telling skill But first he introduces us to storytelling and its important in that time His stories brought to his hearers something very familiar to their setting, couched the story in some dramatic problem, often contained a surprise ending and moved his hearers to reflect on the crisis in the story His examples are the friend who came at midnight, excuses for ref [...]

Synopsis In this short book, Burge guides the reader to interpret Jesus as a storyteller a teacher who uses allegory and hyperbole to make important points within his own social context The book is filled with beautiful pictures and several examples of Jesus use of hyperbole to teach an important point Burge provides historical and cultural insight into what Jesus may have been talking about when telling his parables My thoughts I was surprised at how fun this book was Although it s quite short, [...]

Jesus, the Middle Eastern Storyteller is a useful Bible reference book It gave some basic information on Middle Eastern storytelling techniques of Jesus time period, then discussed cultural background information and the meaning of several parables a friend that comes at midnight, a father s gifts, the great banquet, the good Samaritan, the servant forgiven of a huge debt, the lost sheep, the lost coin, the prodigal son, and the foolish rich farmer. The information was interesting and filled out [...]

I read this book in a group It provided fertile ground for discussions, is heavily pictorial, and short perfect for group reading My group at least The big takeaway for our group was that the parables of Jesus wereradical to his original listeners I ve grown up hearing these stories and often forget that Burge s academic background and easy reading style of writing drove that point home again and again In Jesus day his stories carried radical meaning that we don t easily pick up on today.Recomme [...]

In almost every book he writes, Burge is a MASTER of helping folks understand scriptures better by introducing us to Middle Eastern culture He and books he edits are almost always amazing I also recommend The New Testament in Antiquity

Solid reference guide on the parables of Jesus, focusing on the ancient Middle Eastern cultural background A very good introduction and useful reference For a in depth study, see Jesus through Middle Eastern Eyes by Kenneth Bailey, who Burge thanks in his introduction.

This is a short book that expertly explicates the first century settings of several of Jesus parables I especially appreciated the way that Burge forefronts the communal aspect of life in Jesus day, an aspect of life Westerners like myself are prone to miss.

Another great book using the author s knowledge of Middle Eastern culture to shed light on the Bible.
