Detective Thomas Pitt and his wife Charlotte are at the theater when an appeals court judge, Justice Stafford, is murdered in his box Seems Stafford may have been planning to look into the conviction and hanging of Aaron Godman five years before Godman was accused of killing married playboy Kingsley Blaine who was dallying with Godman s sister Blaine had been stabbed and crucified and Godman was Jewish all of which inflamed the public and may have led to a hasty judgment Could it be that Godman [...]

De los mejores de la serie, con un inesperado giro que hace m s emocionante la historia y sobre todo toca el tema de la intolerancia religiosa un tema que sigue siendo muy actual

It a sad storyline.A young man found guilty and hanged because he was a Jew.His sister tried for years to restore his name and didn t believe he was guilty. One of the judge who believed her, tried to open the 5 years old case, but then someone killed him too.Is not an easy case for Thomas, racist very thick in 19th century England and Micah, his boss wanted him to take over his position Bitch Grandmama been told off and Caroline Charlotte 53 years old mum feel in love with an actor who was 17 ye [...]

This one is about belief and truth and the lengths people will go to for, about and because of same.I never put spoilers in my reviews I d like to mention that Random House does not proofread as well as I d like The copies put out by Open Road Media were far better edited.Anne Perry is a master of the written word Every word, phrase, paragraph is placed for maximum effect There is no filler or waste She has obviously researched the era exhaustively Her insight into the human condition is uncanny [...]

Thirteenth in the Charlotte and Thomas Pitt historical mystery series set in late Victorian England My TakeI love it, I love itGrandmama finally gets all her nastiness thrown back in her face And about frickin time It s also rather sweet to see the about face that Mrs Ellison is performing A new love, a new attitude. These are just about the only bright notes in this story Public outcry and political pressure along with the horror of the crime caused the police to speedily find a culprit who fit [...]

I really enjoyed this novel, dense with clues It took me until late in the novel before I began to suspect the real culprit because as we follow Inspector Pitt through an old case with bearing on a current case, there are dead ends everywhere Perry packs so much atmosphere and detail into these novels and they are really fun to read, even when the subject matter is dark Charlotte, the maid Gracie, and Charlotte s mother, Caroline, all assist with the detective work in an effort to clear a possib [...]

I m on an Anne Perry kick lately and Farrier s Lane was just the ticket to keep me up reading Police Detective Thomas Pitt is on a gruesome murder case and his wife Charlotte, as usual, has to take part in helping to solve the case, often to against her husband s wishes But this old murder and new murder does some how involve her mother s love interest It is set in London in 1889 with the first murder gruesome still unsolved A murder that caused great public outcry and a man was hanged for it bu [...]

This was the story of a heinous crime which was committed five years prior to the time of this novel s setting A young man was stabbed and hung, as if in crucifixion, a fact that leads the police to conclude that the assailant was a Jew A young actor, who was Jewish was tried and executed, but his sister has always insisted that he was innocent The story opens with the death of an Appellate Judge s death, which just happens to occur in the Opera Box next to the one in which were Charlotte and Th [...]

Strictly speaking this was a good, well put together mystery However, I picked it up wanting a nice whodunit to curl up by the fire with and it turned out to be simply far too dark for that The anti Semitic sentiments expressed by many characters, though they are in keeping with the general mindset of the times this is the Victorian age, after all , were so disturbing that for me they marred the book beyond the point where I could enjoy it And the racist superstition SPOILER ALERT which turns ou [...]

This book is full of anti Semitic issues I had no idea that there was so much of this kind of hatred in Victorian England I was raised by parents that did not harbor hatred of people that were of different races or religions This time period is not one that I am very familiar with but I am certainly learning about it as I read each one of Anne Perry s book She makes one think about why people had such fallacies about those of the Jewish faith I know in the Old Testament that it was considered u [...]

Thirteenth in this series This time around Thomas must deal with an unresolved case, a particularly grisly murder of a man crucified against a smithy s door, and the case reopend after a perfectly charming night at the theatre is ruined when Thomas notices a man succumbing to poison in a nearby box A theme of anti Semitism in Victorian England pervades the novel, and we get some insight into the lives of actros and actresses of this period and a bonus visit to the British Museum Charlotte s moth [...]

In which damn, y all fucked up.Charlotte and Thomas are at the theater It s a special treat Except that Thomas looks over and notices that a judge in the next box is apparently, uh, super sleepy Or dying He does in fact die, with his wife fluttering over him.The judge, Judge Stafford, presided over an appeal in the case of Aaron Godman, a Jewish actor who was convicted of killing and crucifying his friend sister s married boyfriend, Kingsley Blaine There was a lot of anti semitic activity at the [...]

Court of Appeals Judge Stafford is poisoned in his theater box while Thomas, Charlotte, and Caroline are in a nearby box enjoying a show with an actor whom Caroline is enad of The investigation seems to lead back to a 5 year old brutal murder case The lead actress is the sister of the man hanged for that murder and she was constantly pleading with Judge Stafford to reopen the case, as she is sure her brother was innocent It was an emotionally charged case with antisemitism at its roots Then the [...]

Very enjoyableIndulge yourself in the audio version 13 cds andwell read by Terrence Hardman I am an Anne Perry fan and was happy to find a Pitt and Charlotte mystery I hadn t read.Ms Perry outdid herself on this one I never sensed the length of Farrier s Lane It was just that good.

The ending was much twistier than other Anne Perry books I ve read, and while the plot plodded along very slowly, there was still lots of interest At about 95% of the way through the plot, Oscar Wilde appears, helpfully providing Pitt with the clue needed to solve the murder.

  16. Gloria Mccracken

I kind of went sour on Anne Perry for awhile one can only take so much depravity and Victorian attitudes But this one surfaced in my library and it was a nice reminder of previous ones.

I ve read all of the books in this series and none have grabbed my interest, but this was the worst so far I think it s time to move on to other series It was a chore to finish it.

The series is really moving along Another great story.Of Belgrave Square, the last novel in Anne Perry s Victorian mystery series, The New York Times proclaimed Miss Perry s themes are reminiscent of Jane Austen s novelsWhen Anne Perry puts Thomas and Charlotte Pitt on the case we are in exemplary Victorian company Now, in Farriers Lane, Anne Perry once again brings back Victorian London with every cobblestone in place We feel the damp fog, smell the flower seller s violets, hear the cries of co [...]

This is my book club s selection for April While I am not usually a great fan of mystery stories, I really enjoyed this book It is well written and aside from the who done it aspect, Farriers Lane gives the reader a feel for Victorian society and life The story concerns the murder of an appeal judge and the re examination of a gruesome murder case The primary characters are Thomas Pitt, a police detective, his wife, Charlotte and their maid, Gracie Though, as with most mysteries, there are an ab [...]

This book was a complete surprise to me I have only read a couple of her books, but enjoyed this so much I am going to start with number 1 to see how Charlotte and Pitt got together I just picked an audio book by her, as I have been reading them out of order Imagine my surprise when a victim is crucifies and the suspect is Jewish I am Jewish and I thought why would they think that Well, I forgot Christians blamed the Jews for Jesus death I alway thought it was the Romans Anyway, I also was surpr [...]

A strong entry in the series and therefore not a quick read Pitt and his wife are at the theater when an appeals court judge in the next box dies One of his colleagues suggests the possibility of murder and Pitt is charged with investigating what turns out to be opium poisoning The poisoning may or may not be connected to a five year old case where the convicted killer of a man crucified in a back alley is alleged to have been innocent a case the judge was contemplating reopening Things are heav [...]

Finished this one this morning AP did not disappoint Although it would have added to my enjoyment of the book to have read several of the novels that preceded this one,it still stands on its own as an intriguing story Thomas and Charlotte Pitt are attending a play with his mother in law when he notices a gentleman in a booth several feet away having some kind of physical difficulty Thomas recognizes the man as a judge of the appellate court in London The man collapses and later dies They soon di [...]

Not a bad read But not the best Pitt mystery I had read Maybe it is because i was reading primarily on aeroplanes, but this story just did not have the attraction for me that previous ones had I specifically found it annoying that not only is Charlotte Pitt the wife helping with the investigation, but the old aunt, the mother in law and the maid are also helping I thought that was stretching things a bit The story was itself good a judge is murdered, potentially because he is re investigating a [...]

An interesting Victorian murder mystery but I would not call it cozy nor a light read Thomas Pitt finds himself investigating the murder of Judge Stafford which leads him to a grizzly murder of five years ago I knew immediately who Judge Stafford s murderer was, but was wrong on the grizzly murder of 5 years ago and a third murder With three murders you can see why I don t call it cozy or light As always, Pitt s wife, Charlotte, steps in to do her own sleuthing this time with the help of her mot [...]

I began reading the Charlotte and Thomas Pitt mysteries piecemeal, as I found them, and as new ones were published, and believed that I had read all of them It was with joy that I realized that the one I had picked up last week was not a re read, but a first time read for me.This book has my favourite characters in it Aunt Vespasia and Gracie even Charlotte s mother Caroline is much human in this book, enthralled with the freedom widowhood has given her, and further enthralled with an actor who [...]

  28. Lynne Tull

Lucky 13 Ms Perry has just the right amount of balance between Charlotte and Thomas as they go about trying to solve one old crime and two new ones This time Charlotte draws in her mother instead of her sister Even the house maid gets into the act It was draggy in places as we visited the suspects over and over again and then once However, I didn t skip a wordwell, maybe one or two Thomas had to do with the solution this time At least, it wasn t all up to Charlotte Still, recommending

Inspector Pitt and his wife, Charlotte, work to solve the murder of an appellate court judge, which further leads to retracing the investigation of an older heinous murder of a gentleman who had been having an affair with an actress Inspector Pitt must determine whether there is a connection between the two murders and whether or not the man hanged for the initial murder truly had been guilty In Farriers Lane, Anne Perry touched upon prejudice and the restrictions society places on love This wa [...]
