Award winning author Robert D San Souci, perhaps best known for his retellings of traditional tales as well as his Dared to be Scared series and award winning illustrator, E B Lewis have brought us a gorgeous new oversized picture book based on one of the best known super heroes of the olden days, Robin Hood In this particular tale, which San Souci adapted from earlier versions dating to the 15th century , Robin s nemesis, the Sheriff of Nottingham, comes up with what he thinks is a sure fire me [...]

HeroSan Souci, Robert D Robin Hood and the golden arrow 2010 Robin Hood and his merry men decide to outwit the scheming Sheriff of Nottingham by disguising themselves and entering an archery contest that they surely win This retelling of a popular adventure of hero legend Robin Hood revives the traditional classic in a cheerful feel good manner Illustrator, E B Lewis brings life and vivacity to the courageous antics of Robin Hood and paints lively greens characteristic of the medieval forest set [...]

I think this is a fine picture book for the primary grades e.g K 2 grade Admittedly, the book s characters and plot are not very realistic to older readers However, kindergarteners to second graders will likely find the book highly entertaining The illustrations are very realistic, which makes the action scenes attractive and interesting Ultimately, the illustrations are what bring this timeless tale to life I don t think the dialogue was particularly believable In particular, Robin Hood address [...]

Robin Hood and his men take part in an archery contest with the Sheriff of Nottingham Robin dresses as a stranger and outsmarts the sheriff, only to send a friendly note to show the sheriff who s boss This classic story, as we find in the author s note, is part of collection compiled by Frances James Child who gathered many Robin Hood stories into the Child Ballads in the 1450 s I loved the illustrations in this one and would recommend it to anyone, especially young children, who love fairy tale [...]

This shortened version is based on the Epic tale of Robin Hood There are much longer versions, but this tale was based on a ballad that was contained in a longer version The story itself was charming and offers children insight into who some of our first superheros were The illustrations in this book were mesmerizing The illustrations were full paged, full of detail and were filled with rich, luxoriuos color Children of all ages will get caught up in the excitement of our beloved Robin Hood and [...]

Handsome if rather spare retelling of one of the classic Robin Hood ballads Truthfully I would have expected something poetic from San Souci, who has a talent for retelling classic folktales If he was going to do Robin Hood shouldn t he have captured the rhythm of a ballad.Someone commented that this seems based on Hollywood than on history I m not sure what details she was referring to As a collector of Robin Hood books and an amateur student of medieval history I don t see a problem with thi [...]

This is an awesome picture book that I found in the fairy tale folk tale section It is easy to read at bed time to my 6 year old and 4 year old It would also be easy to read for a story time for older children, say in the 2nd 4th grade As a child, I loved Robin Hood and King Arthur stories Definitely a book for a reluctant boy reader over the age of 6.

traditional lit 2010This is the well known story of how Robin Hood, disguised as a beggar, wins an archery contest that was set up as a trap for him But the story is not the star of this picture book The illustrations are beautifully done I can t imagine how long the artist spent on these impressionist style paintings.

  12. Jamie

The sheriff wanted to capture Robin Hood and his marry men He comes up with a plan to capture them He sets up an archery contest with the prize of a golden arrow Robin and his marry men go to the contest in a disguise Robin hood dresses as begger in red rags, an eye patch, yellow hair, and a brown beard Robin goes to the contest Robin wins the contest and was never caught.

  13. Yelena

Yet another abridged retelling of the Robin Hood legend unnecessary and pedestrian I expected something inspired and less insipid from San Souci and E.B Lewis Yet another book that bases its illustrations on the early Hollywood depiction of Robin Hood, rather than on anything remotely history appropriate not that most readers would care about this issue.

  14. BookKids

Stories of Rovin Hood and his band of merry outlaws have entertained us for generations And young readers will love being introduced to the legend in this new, gorgeously illustrated retelling.

  15. Amanda

  16. Vivian

San Souci and Lewis, superstars of narration and illustration respectively, serve up the legendary Robin Hood Best used as a teaser to inspire interest in young enthusiasts to read tales.

  17. Donalyn

A brief retelling of the famous Robin Hood tale I wish the story had been developed, but it serves as a serviceable introduction to the legend.

  18. Trace

A great introduction to Robin Hood for my little guy I ll look forward to reading the unabridged version later on when he s a little older Illustrations were beautiful.

  19. Alissa

While the illustrations were nice, the story was bland and rushed I was disappointed by the lack of quality that picture books usually deliver.
