I d love to use The Story of Jonas for a book club choice or read aloud for 4th or 5th graders A great enlightenment escape to freedom story, especially for younger readers Jonas accompanies his master s ne er do well son Percy on the covered wagon trail to Pikes Peak to hunt for gold On the way, he meets people who view him as an equal and the doctor s daughter starts to teach him to read Not as graphic or violent as say, My Name is Sally Little Song, Elijah of Buxton, or Nightjohn Dahlberg use [...]

The story is about a slave boy named Jonas. In the story Jonas goes with his master s son Percy, to Kansas territory,to mine for gold.Percy is one of the meanest people you would ever meet.Jonas meets lots of people that treat him as an equal,ad not as a slave, while on the trip.Jonas runs away from Percy to try to find Mr.Rulo, who is a friend,so he can go to Mexico where there is no slavery The story was an overal good story, but the author should ve made Jonas the narrator and not herselfe should [...]

This is an interesting story of a slave who is accompanying his master s son to Kansas Territory to hunt for gold, and decides to go to Mexico to be free The story doesn t cover the trip to Mexico, but rather covers Jonas changed views and his sudden desire for freedom as he heads towards Kansas.

An incredible book crying out for a sequel I was hoping to find out what happened to Jonas after the end of the story Fantastic insight into slavery and the question of doing what s right and not necessarily legal.

Mark Twain nominee 2009 2010 It was an entertaining read, and I m glad it didn t have a perfectly tied up ending However, Elijah of Buxton is much evolved and sophisticated for younger readersd much realistic and heart wrenching This is a little bit fluff and a little bit history.

Another Mark Twain list historical fiction This one was just ok I think it is on the list because it does start out in Missouri.
