I ve only known Doonesbury from the mid 90s, and it was fun to see how it started, along with some back of the scene stories For instance, I didn t know another person was inking the pictures I wonder how it is doing these days I sorta quit reading physical newspaper around the time Alex was pregnant .

I thoroughly enjoyed this compact history of the Doonesbury empire I particularly enjoyed the sections focusing on the inker and the colorist and am tickled to learn that there is now a custom Doonesbury font for the lettering A good gift for the Doonesbury fan, if you know someone who likes enormous coffee table books.

Along with Calvin Hobbes its the greatest comic strip ever created And much like Bill Watterson, Garry Trudeau has always been a pretty private figure The insights into him and the last 40 years of his strip contained in this book were incredibly fascinating.

Good stuff especially if you re a fan of Doonesbury It focuses on the art how his drawing and the strip overall improved over time and on some of his personal experience over the years.
